between arc basalt composition and Moho depth Quantifying crustal thickness variations in evolving orogens : Correlation

چکیده
A compilation of geochemical data from >50 active volcanoes where seismically defi ned Moho depth measurements are available, representing most volcanic arcs around the world, indicates a relation exists between crustal thickness (Moho depth) and the trace element composition of basalts. The best correlation exists for maximum light/heavy rare earth element (REE) ratios, and we use maximum Ce/Y (R2 = 0.90) to show the exponential function with increasing depth, to 50 km. Application to New Zealand, part of the eastern Gondwanan margin through much of the Phanerozoic, shows that higher Ce/Y ratios in arc basalts correspond to two periods of recognized crustal thickening, plus an additional event at ca. 240 Ma, which links New Zealand to the Gondwanide Orogeny. Conversely, low Ce/Y ratios in basalts correlate with periods of recognized extension in eastern Gondwana. Very high Ce/Y ratios in ca. 120 Ma rocks imply an unusually thickened (~50 km) arc crust, consistent with independent geological estimates of crustal thickness at that time. The correlation shows that crustal thickness variations during orogenesis can be conservatively estimated to within ±3 km.

Southern African crustal evolution and composition: Constraints from receiver function studies
[1] Stacking of approximately 1500 radial receiver functions recorded at about 80 broadband seismic stations deployed in southern Africa reveals systematic spatial variations in the ratio of crustal P and S wave velocities (F), crustal thickness (H), and the amplitude of the converted Moho phases (R). The eastern Zimbabwe and the southern Kaapvaal cratons are characterized by small H ( 38 km), ...

[1] We estimate crustal structure and thickness of South America north of roughly 40°S. To this end, we analyzed receiver functions from 20 relatively new temporary broadband seismic stations deployed across eastern Brazil. In the analysis we include teleseismic and some regional events, particularly for stations that recorded few suitable earthquakes. We first estimate crustal thickness and av...

We present a quantitative assessment of the thermal and dynamic response of an amphibolitic lower crust to the intrusion of basaltic dike swarms in an arc setting. We consider the effect of variable intrusion geometry, depth of intrusion, and basalt flux on the production, persistence, and interaction of basaltic and crustal melt in a stochastic computational framework. Distinct melting and mix...

[1] Lateral variations of the crustal structure in southern California are determined from receiver function (RF) studies using data from the Southern California Seismic Network broadband stations and Los Angeles Regional Seismic Experiment surveys. The results include crustal thickness estimates at the stations themselves, and where possible, cross sections are drawn. The large-scale Moho dept...
متن کاملTracking changes in crustal thickness during orogenic evolution with Sr/Y: An example from the North American Cordillera
Global compilations indicate that the geochemistry of arc magmatism is sensitive to Moho depth. Magmatic products are prevalent throughout the history of Cordilleran orogenesis and can be employed to constrain the timing of changes in crustal thickness as well as the magnitude of those changes. We investigate temporal variations in crustal thickness in the United States Cordillera using Sr/Y fr...
